8 Free Online Flash Games to Play and Share

As part of the Diploma of Interactive Design here at Natcoll, students are involved in flash game development. They are required to design and programme a game using Flash. We have included a selection in this blog post for you to enjoy and share with your friends. Feel free to comment below if you particularly like any of these – our students would love to hear your feedback.

We’ve given you a brief review of each, to get things started.

Smashcoll is a great game. Beat up your opponent and play in the different levels. Awesome graphics for students to have created this game! It’s an action-packed two player game where the players battle each other. The more you hit your opponent the further they fly. If you fly off the screen you lose a life. The special moves are great, I played with the dude with red hair and he had a move which popped out an awesome dragon to get the other player.

Give it a go!

This is a very detailed, strongly visual game with a cool flash intro. Setting is space, and your playing piece is a comet. You get three lives, and apparently there are levels which you access by going through a portal. Hopefully I will manage to get through a portal next time I play to see what the ongoing levels look like. This game appears reasonably complex at first look, but I have a feeling it is one that would grow on you as you master the necessary skills to control the movement of your comets. It could do with a little more explanation of the objective of the game – the initial instructions just explain what each of the different elements does. I was a little confused by the fact that although I seemed to be scoring points during the game, at the end my score was always zero. Possibly this changes if you get through to the next level? Or perhaps this area needs further development.

Skills required: Learning how to move the comet using the mouse – you click on planets to draw the comet towards them, but if it gathers too much speed, then it goes beyond the controlled area and you lose a life. Definitely some degrees of difficulty in this game and you will want to play it more than once to master the skills.

3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Dodge enemy fire and destroy the enemy droid ships! Great Star Wars music, sound effects and animated rockets. Collect the power ups to get special bonuses

Skill required: Using the arrow keys to turn and move forward and back.

To play the game click on it and hit the Enter key. Graphics are great with the uncooked chickens flying around. Top marks for graphics, very cute and really reminds me of the old 1980’s games. Quite funny when you get killed and the chicken bones go flying

Skill required: Using the arrow keys to turn and move forward and back.

Quite cool how you get to choose the path, how the video stops and shows you things to click on. It’s more like a ‘pick a path’ movie rather than a game.

Cute little flash game with very simple visuals. Instructions are easy to follow – the basic idea of the game is to use the cannon at the bottom of the screen to shoot the birds flying across, and dodge the clouds, which also move across the screen. Hitting the space bar fires the cannon, and if you hit a cloud, the cannonball falls back. Further development could see the cannon being destroyed if it gets hit by a falling cannonball or similar. Had ability to record scores at end of game.

Skills required: Using left and right arrow keys to move the cannon, and space bar to fire. Anticipate the movement of the birds, clouds and speed of the balls.

Fire at the blocks rolling towards you! The imagery on this is 3D, so a bit more advance than some of the other games, with the blocks rotating as they roll towards you. Although the game is a bit monotonous as there is little movement.

Skill required: Use the arrow keys to move and space to fire

This was not a winner for me unfortunately. It is a simple game that requires you to catch falling red bricks with the blue brick at the bottom of the screen. Movement to left and right is with the arrow keys. There is a very low level of tolerance for mistakes, so whenever you miss a brick the game ends immediately.

Skills required: Left and right arrow movement, anticipation of falling brick speed.

The comet game and Smashcoll are both made by an Interactive student named Aaron Gale. Im surprised his name has not been mentioned as at least a credit!?

  5. Natcoll says:

Thanks Christo – yes, we should have credited the students, thanks for pointing out. Have amended.

  6. Malcolm says:

These are some good games but they all lack the number one most important thing. PRELOADERS!! If you plan to put a game you made in Flash on the internet then you need to have a preloader in it otherwise it wont load properly when people try to play it.

  7. hamish says:

Hi Malcolm, We had a few issues trying to get the preloaders working on the web because of filepaths in the script. We just wanted to give people an idea of what the students have been doing. The preloaders work fine when the students submitted them offline, which is part of the project requirement.
