STAR-funded Courses
STAR courses are a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their creative abilities and learn skills and techniques in IT design.
Our courses are tailor-made to suit your students’ levels of learning and have been developed from our diploma courses in: Computer Graphic Design, Web Development, Digital Animation & Video (Lvl 5), Interactive Design and Animation, each NZQA Lvl 6 accredited.
Our short courses are available, using Apple Mac computers and industry- standard software, in our STAR lab, or at your premises. A typical STAR course runs for 4 days and is held between 9am – 3pm. If you wish to run a course at your school, we can do that too. We can be flexible and responsive to the needs of your students, so we can offer shorter courses, tailoring the times to suit your situation, (e.g. a 4-day course could be run as 2 days one week and 2 days the following week). This can be advantageous if you wish to minimise disruptions to the ongoing educational commitments of your students.
Each course can be designed according to the needs of each group. We offer a combination of formal class teaching, where students will develop a set of industry-related skills – and project based work, where students can develop their own portfolio work related to their school programme. This may include students completing specific briefs to complement their current or up-coming school projects. All our tutors are industry-trained and have experience working in the industry. Students will be learning skills and techniques that could open up a world of career opportunities.

STAR funding eligibility of YOOBEE @Natcoll short courses
We believe our short course programmes fit with the STAR funding criteria, where the intention of STAR is to allow schools to provide individual students with learning experiences that link to a particular student’s career interests, which schools would not normally offer.
• YOOBEE @Natcoll’s short courses are derived from aspects of our vocationally focused Diploma courses. These are all recognised by NZQA as being at either level 5 or level 6 on the National Qualifications Framework, and provide learning well in advance of most school programmes.
• Our short courses use the latest versions of industry standard software, which not all schools have access to.
• Our short courses emphasise the alignment of the design and software skills taught with current industry standards and expectations; this emphasis is achieved through the use of industry-experienced tutors with knowledge most school teachers are unlikely to possess.
• To the best of our knowledge and planning our short courses are not aligned to, or involve assessment against, any unit standards on the STAR Exclusion List (SEL).
Students completing YOOBEE @Natcoll short courses develop skills relevant to the needs of the creative digital industries, gain insights into the standards these industries demand, and get to experience a taste of tertiary level study.
Experience tells us that students who complete our short courses are:
• Better placed to make decisions relating to careers in the digital media industries.
• Well informed about study options and pathways YOOBEE @Natcoll can offer that lead into these industries.
• Often highly motivated and excited about digital technologies.STAR offers schools the opportunity to better the needs of individual students with regard to career exploration. The short courses on offer at YOOBEE @Natcoll provide this opportunity.
Please note the responsibility to make decisions on the use of STAR funding lies with the school. Natcoll suggests that where uncertainty exists, teachers should first seek advice from the STAR team within their school or from one of the nationally appointed STAR Advisors.
